We all know we should exercise frequently, but when we’re working a busy schedule, it can be difficult to actually keep up with it. In these cases, it’s tempting to just leave it out of your routine, but this can be very detrimental to your health in the long run. There are plenty of different ways you can continue to exercise when you’re busy, you just have to make them a habit.
One of the best ways to incorporate exercise into a busy schedule is to make it part of your regular commute. If you can walk or bike to work, this is a great way to burn a few calories and get your body moving without wasting any time. Plus, you won’t have to sit in horrible morning traffic or be crowded on public transportation. It may take a little longer to commute this way, but you’ll still save time by not having to trek all the way to the gym and back. If you can’t walk or bike to work, consider going for a walk on your lunch break instead to get a little bit of fresh air and exercise.
Another great way to exercise when you are very busy is to spend time with your kids. Kids are generally very active and have lots of energy, so you’ll get a great workout in without even noticing it just by chasing them around. Take them to the park to play a fun game of tag or soccer, and you’ll not only get a workout, but you’ll also get to spend time with your family. If you don’t have kids, you could also consider doing athletic activities with your friends instead of just meeting for drinks or food. Consider who in your friend group has the same athletic interests as you, and then take an hour or two to go play a game or work out together. When you play with friends, working out feels like much less of an effort.
If you really only have short breaks in your day, take those minutes and make the most of them. Pick a few exercises that you can do in a small space, like jumping jacks, push-ups, or squats, and do a few of them every time you have a quick break in your day. When you really look, you’ll find that you actually have tons of opportunities to fit in a quick workout – right when you wake up, in between meetings, or even right before you go to bed. Taking advantage of the time you have makes all the difference. You’ll find that even exercising just a little bit can help you feel healthier and happier.
